Mozcafe at Salem startup space

Recently on June 25th Black corporation founder & CEO introduced Salem startup space. He had a very good aim of bring knowledge on different domains and skills to Salem community. It was really an exciting day and an amazing day to get started for Salem folks.

I also attended event with aim for learning about people who are in my native. It was really amazing to see lot of ideas related to IoT and software startups jumped in. It was nice to see young amazing entrepreneur at that space from Salem.

I have shared this news about meeting to the trainers  who are in #MozillaTNwoc16 are around Salem. At first three told they will be joining, so I thought  I can discuss about the improvement and taking the community to next level, but on that day only 2 trainers turned Bhuvana meenakshi and Ashley rose, paarilovely had some issues so he was not able to come to meet on time.  And those 2 people have brought in around 8 other young students who willing to learn amazing things.

On that day I was introducing people about what are all contribution I get started and where I am landing now, what’s my future aims for contribution to all the audience. Then at the end of the meet up, I personally called both the trainers and sharing what’s our aim of weeks of contribution, what we planning to achieve and how we can build our community. And was discussing how we can try to use this space for doing events related to Mozilla.

I was very happy to meet another 2 trainers in the list. I was very happy to share my knowledge and get feedback from people in building our community.

One of our plan was to host all the events in weeks of contributions at the Salem and specifically we are planning for 1 day specifically  hackathon session related to web extensions during August 15th.

Mozcoffee with Makilan

In previous post  I shared about #MozillaTNWoc16 after that I wanted to meet all the trainers and mentors who are participating. It will be very helpful to talk in detail for an hour in person and learn more what they think about Weeks of contribution and in general contribution to Mozilla.

It was actually sunny day on 20th June at Chennai, Makilan has came to Chennai to do his project work a week before our meeting. He was about to leave Chennai and told he would like to meet me in person, seriously I have not meet many Mozillains in tamilnadu who are currently active. I was very happy to know he wanted to meet me. Since I will be working at office he told he would like to come and meet there, thanks to him since I use to concentrate more on code in the evenings, he didn’t make any changes to my schedule. He reached around 4:30. Then I took him to nearby restaurant (A2B) pretty decent one in Tamilnadu. We ordered some foods and then started talking about contributions. Rain started all of sudden and we were enjoying our talk and food.

He was asking review about social media channel he is maintaining and about sharing birthday wishes to our region contributors, it’s seriously an amazing idea he brought which is making many contributors to engage more with our social media channels. Then he was talking in general where he can focus more and what are plans for weeks of contribution. Then I was enquiring about his project he done at Chennai. His project was very exciting one[ will get his post and update soon].  He was one of the different background person, and as very little number of contributors think he used to think different and wanted to take internet and contribution awareness to remote places and wanted to train people who are willing to learn and give back.  He was also discussing about extending weeks of contribution program structure to build community in his college.

It was really an exciting day, and he is first trainer of #MozillaTNWoc16 I have met. Was very happy to know about him and meet in person, his goals are very amazing to learn and get enriched.

Weeks of Contribution 2016

WOC

So last year myself along with other contributors started Weeks of Contribution Program for contributors around MozillaTN . The first version went fine, by I had lot of learning in teaching new contributors and encouraging them to contribute.  At end of 2015 Weeks of contribution we saw 15 new contributors, detailed report is available in one of my previous post

This year again our MozillaTN community is doing Weeks of Contribution. We are making some serious changes to take care of new contributors and yes we are setting some goals in the 4 contribution areas Localization, Support Mozilla, Quality Assurance and Add-ons.

This year I am going to handle Add-ons development along with some bug fixing, planning to help young developers  and bring around 25+ add-ons from developers around Tamilnadu. Khaleel will be taking care of the Localization where he made a target of 5000 strings converted by end of 2 months, he has also planned 2 offline events. Karthick has planned to share his knowledge with respect to Support Mozilla, his target is to achieve 40 KB articles translated. Adam and Prashanth are planning to host Firefox test days. So for next 2 months our community members will be busy with learning.

Why these 4 areas alone

There are large number of pathways in which we can contribute to Mozilla Community.  For very long time in our community we saw the number of contributors in Localization and SUMO is decreasing and it is very important to have browser in Tamil and support articles in Tamil so we are doing these 2. Quality assurance is very important in software development life cycle, many students who have technical knowledge can contribute to automation testing those without coding knowledge can contribute to Manual testing. And Firefox Addons are moving WebExtensions model, so it is right time to learn about it port old add-ons to this model, develop new add-ons.

Trainers are our Game Changing Contributor of 2016

Last year we had session in Google hangouts on Air that too in English, many contributors know to speak Tamil well and prefer to learn in Tamil than in English. And since it was not closed call, we are not able to track actively what contributors are doing. So this year we have introduced a concept of Trainers. Trainers are amazing people who are active and having willingness to share what they learned and train maximum of 7 people in focused manner. We had Google form so people can fill who have interest. Around 40 people showed interest.  But keeping in mind that it is going to be difficult to monitor 40 people and all the contributors who they teach (say appx 450 ppl) we have cut shorted to 20 Trainers. So this year we are having only 20 Trainers.  As of now on avg each and every Trainer has planned to teach around 5 new contributors.

What will be my role this year

  • I will be one of the contributor (along with karthick and Khaleel) who is monitoring the activities of each and every Trainers. Will be helping them when they are finding any difficulty.
  • Will be working with Social Media Team ( Selva Makilan & Gowtham Venkat) in posting updates at Facebook and Twitter then with Design member (Nirmal) to find out posters for all our blog posts.
  • Hosting offline event at Salem(Khaleel & Adam is doing at Villupuram, Karthick is doing at Vellore, Dinesh & Gauthamraj at F-infotech Erode, Ammar at   Madurai)

What’s my expectation at end of this weeks of contribution

One of my main goal is to spotlight contributors who are doing great job around Tamilnadu. Previously I have got chance to participate in amazing events like community India meetup (2014& 2015) and Mozilla All hands at Orlando. These meetup are really great place to learn many things. One of sad thing for me during this 3 events was number of contributors from Tamilnadu region is very low. Many contributors here do amazing contributors but due to low visibility and some guidance they are not getting proper recognition. One of my main aim is to bring amazing contributors and help them communicating with other mozillians in community, then they can easily find the path to improve themselves. I have faith, Surely with the amazing trainers we have got we will be doing well.

My main aim to join open source communities is to contribute to code base and share awareness to other benefits of using open source softwares. One of my main aim is to bring like minded contributors share their work with others through blog post social media and other possible channels.

Some of ways I can contribute is by teaching addons development, community building and helping people to get started with first step of contribution.

Mozilla Tamilnadu Community Playbook 2015

Recently Mozilla Reps Council asked Mozilla Reps to fill Community yearbook for 2015. It was asked to fill to know more about the local community who are actively contributing. You can find the yearbook in Google presentationg

11081154_10205755330258005_242936334565058324_n

Each community can use one sheet to say what they have achieved in 2015, what are their proud moment in 2015 and what are their plans in 2016 then who are Mozillians present in the community. So I was exciting to fill for Mozilla Tamilnadu (MozillaTN shortly) Community. Other Mozilla contributors and Reps were very helpful in this process.

So the very first step I did was creating a etherpad for this and asked all the contributors to share their knowledge about our community and share their blogposts about the events they have done and regarding the FSA who are actively involved.

Mozillians Stats

There are amazing people who have contributed very well in the past year and before that,

  • Mozilla Reps – 7
  • Firefox  Regional Ambassador Lead – 1
  • Active FSA Club – 3
  • Active FSA’s – 50

We are sure we have missed some of the FSA clubs and FSA’s. But only 3 Club leads came forward to share about them. On seeing this stat really we are very big community and have large number of contributors. Hope in future we will increase the impact done by these contributors and have good communication with all.

Events Done

Large number of FSA’s are actively involved in doing events in both online and offline in their college to spread awareness about Mozilla products. We say there are more than 25+ events done in 2015. Some of the massive events are

  • Weeks of Contribution
  • Series of MozCoffee to  build FSA community
  • FSA Campaign Challenge
  • Bug Triage days
  • L10n Sprint
  • MDN Sprint
  • App days

On Seeing this our community more loves events in Localization, Documentation, Bug Triage and QA, Firefox OS Apps building,Marketing and Community building. So in 2016 More focus will be given to these contribution areas and will be adding other contributors in other contribution areas too.

Achievements in 2015

Our community members have done some of the significant achievements as a whole community and individually.

  • Karthikeyan become one of the RAL for FSA program
  • Adam has been named as FSA super star and he was also appreciated by MDN community for his contribution to Firefox OS page creation.
  • Many contributors have brought new community members to contribute.

Community Structure

In 2015 we didn’t actively follow any community structure, when a new contributor comes in and asks question then the contributor who was aware of that area of contribution will come forward to answer them. This didn’t scale much. There were many contributors who had same doubts as other had.

2016 Community Plans

We have some goals in 2016 as a whole community. We have set a very big goals for upcoming year. Some of them are as follows

  1.  Community Meetup (Tamilnadu Community Meetup)
  2. Re Structuring the Community to have mentor-mentee
  3. Brining 20+ active FSA clubs.
  4. Constantly following up Contributors to know about them & update them with latest paths to contribute.

Our community year book is here

Thanks to all the community members who helped in bring this awesome yearbook of Mozilla Tamilnadu Community and special thanks to Mozilla Reps council and participation team for bringing such a opportunity to know about our community.

Will be happy to know about your thoughts regarding our awesome community and also love to hear your thoughts on problems we faced.

Weeks of Contribution – Impact on me & community part-2

In my previous post I have shared what are the basic things we had for Weeks of Contribution program and what are short learnings in that. In this post you will be seeing what are the areas we covered and what we shared to participants.

Mozilla Location Services

We started with Mozilla Location services, in our region most of cells towers and wifi signals are not captured. I feel it is one of the most easy contribution to Mozilla, I have also previously written about MLS contribution how easy it is. The detailed wrap up about the event is also share in the blog.

The syllabus for area is very simple, how to capture the cell phone towers and wifi signals. Shared where it will be helpful to the community. In future we will be dealing about how to use the API’s.

For this we have created a small leaderboard which we will manually enter the scores, and updated it at the end of the 2 months to filed who got the maximum points.

We are seeing good contribution from contributors like Achyuth, Makilan who are helping to capture more tower and wifi signals.

Localisation

One of the main reason why many people love to use Firefox web browser is because they can have it in their local language. We had introduction to pootle and Verbatim. We saw some new contributors started contributing. This area of contribution is done mainly by the contributors who love technology and love their language. Some of thoughts about this event is here.

Our mentor Khaleel is helping lot of new contributors.

Documentation

This is one of the most important task for any software developer. He/ She has to write about what he has developed or what his module ll do in general. It is really a good learning when you contribute to Documentation projects like MDN. We had a session on MDN and maintain blog about your contribution. Before choosing this contribution path we had a small session on documentation contribution. You can learn about the documentation event here, the important achievement we have done is we created a small pilot project which will help share news to FSA bloggers.

One of the most active contributor for this project now in Tamilnadu is Adam, who is actively participating in Documentation projects.

Firefox OS app development

For past few days Firefox OS have gained lot of traction among developers and technologist. It is very important to bring more local applications to the Firefox Marketplace. We wanted everyone to show their code in github because we can find the bugs and report the developer.

Our syllabus is very simple,  Creating a github account then creating a responsive website then Making the github page website to Firefox OS app.

We saw some of our contributors creating websites for their college FSA club Paarttipaabhalaji,Gowtham Venkat Craken sio and so on.

In future we have planned to share more about Firefox OS API’s in detail, all the source code will be available by contributors. My main aim is to write a small book so contributors can learn in offline at any time.

Add-ons Development

Add-ons is helping Firefox browser is customizing. The crazy of developing Add-ons are there with developers for very long time. This is another reason for using Firefox browser. We had very small learning about how to setup for developing Add-ons. In future we will be learning more about WebExtensions. Naresh is helping lot of community members to know more about this.

SUMO – Support Mozilla

Many of the Firefox Users know whenever they get problems in their browser they will tweet about it, and some contributors will be coming and helping you by sharing the articles in twitter. The contribution as of now focused in this local community is very low, hope in future it will increase.

We have missed some of the good contribution area in this post, but we will not miss it to teach. This post is very lengthy I know very well, it will surely help the community members to get ignited and help the new contributors.

The next step is building stronger community with new community members. Regarding this I have already mentioned in one of the post. It is really a cool beginning we had.

Weeks of Contribution – Impact on me & community part-1

I have been writing more about Weeks of Contribution program.  This program was first started by 4 contributors from Tamilnadu. Nareshkumar,Khaleel, Vignesh, Myself had some discussion when we meet and planned for some 1 month. Among us 3 (Nareshkumar, Khaleel, Viswaprasath)of us are Mozilla reps.

For first few days we had some basics works like website creation, common mailing group, Social media accounts in Facebook, twitter and so on.

I remember when I wrote my first post about Weeks of Contribution I have mentioned the below line

Hope at the end of this program around 20 new contributors will start contributing to various contribution areas.

Still we plan lot of activities to bring lot of contributors who will contribute to Mozilla projects for long time and with Good impact to Mozilla and also to Community.

We had very good support from other community members also, especially  vigneshwer who visited many FSA’s in different cities around Tamilnadu. One of our big support in our Firefox Student Ambassador-Regional Ambassador Lead karthik

Registration

At the Beginning we have got whopping 150 registration. We thought we are seriously going to make a very big impact. Seriously we are going to bring some more contributors to Tamilnadu, we were very excited to see this number. When we got this we know the only way to reach each and every one is web.

Planning

We had a plan to teach about the areas which we had learnt to some extent. Contribution is always a  learning process, we learn when we teach to others with this motto we loved teaching. Below are the areas we have targeted.

  • Mozilla Location Services
  • Bug fixing
  • One and Done
  • Documentation
  • Firefox OS app development
  • Add-ons Development
  • Localisation
  • SUMO
  • WoMoz

But not all the activities we are able to do. Due to  some other high priorities we had to skip 1 or 2 events.

Publicising Events

Each week on Monday will be contacting the other contributors what area can be focused on the weekend. Then will be sending mails in google groups (we are not able to send in bcc to many, Gmail thinks we are spamming people ), and we made a events in Google+ with hangouts on Air, and Facebook events so many people who are eager to learn will be loving to join us.

Some of the learning I got on this is

  • I learned well how to publicise the event
  • How to engage more with people both in online personal & group chat and offline.
  • Managing and planing online events.
  • How to teach people and planning a curriculum for continuous learning

What our Local community got

  • We after a long time, got many new contributors who are willing to learn.
  • A good Facebook group then page, active telegram group.
  • Lot of discussions and learning

This is the first post in this series will be sharing who are the contributors newly joined community and how all the existing contributors got engaged more.
