MozillaIN Planning Meet up 2016

Mozilla India is one of the biggest contributor community and vibrant one. For past few years we are growing very strongly and consistently. Last year 2015 was very amazing year for us, after Taskforce meetup, we contributors had ambition to bring much more contributors, due to this aim number of student contributors grown to huge number due to this everyone had some confusion like how to report the events and contributors they have brought and events they have done, then how to highlight the contribution done by the contributor near them, this should some ways to bring regional communities. Even we in Tamilnadu started a small regional community named MozillaTN with the aim to highlight the contributors in our Tamilnadu so it will be exciting for others to contribute on seeing them, like me everyone  had aim to not to move out of Mozilla India community goal. So to make sure the amazing contributors are recognized and everyone goals are align we had Community India planning meetup.

I reached bit late to session on first day, joined from session handled by Haiyya  where we learned more about Story telling. It was one of awesome session where we learnt more about us and to project us.

Then George jumped in and started to share what are the vision of Mozilla and Mozilla’s area of focus for the next 6 months. Shared those amazing areas below

      1. Firefox/Context Graph/TestPilot
      2. Future of Platform/Servo
      3. Connected Devices
      4. Mozilla Issues Agenda and Advocacy
      5. Mozilla Leadership Network

Then we divided among us into 5 different groups to learn what are these areas and to share with remaining other contributors. I had opportunity to form team with Ankit and Faisal, one of amazing  people. Had good time to interact with them and work with them.

Among those areas listed above, I am glad I am closely following what happening at 1 & 3, then trying to learn 2.

Then we had the design session on forming the Task Force teams. Before that we got to know how the Mozilla India task force team was started and what was its goal by Vineel and Deb. These two are amazing people who used to come forward first whenever we need any help.

Then again we divided as 5 members team and started working on how we should have the task force team for Indian community in future. This time I was sitting with Vineel, Mehul, Prathamesh, Anivar and George was note taking all the points we were discussing. Then the consolidated points were shared by George and Vineel

Some of my suggestion was, there should be an easy way for  all sub communities to inherit task force model, functional contribution areas should be there in task force team, and then there should be a team which can work with all the team to work on exciting projects and get it done.

Then we had quick discussion on what happened on that day, and we had grand dinner at hotel and then left to where we stay. And amazing group photo at venue.

Then next day we started the main session with what are the goals of Mozilla India community meetup, tentative date when it will happen.

So my suggestions were like finding new ways of recognition (letter or appreciation , Linkedin recommendation and so on), determining ways for cross sub-community communication. Then we got a chance to learn how Mozilla India community started, which is an interesting and surprise session by Vineel. His talk was always well organized, calm and exciting.

Then we got chance to split and take some amazing responsibilities to work for upcoming days. I got chance to contribute as Regional Co-oridnator  along with Mehul, Akhil. We three are responsible to check whether our learning at this Meetup is shared, finding exciting leaders from different parts of countries to share what happened at planning meetup and will also pull up some other ways to contribute, planning to contact various Mozilla Employees with whom I am in touch to know what is their teams focus but for this role also we have an amazing team (staff / functional team) members Sayak and Anivar. There is logistics team which includes Prathamesh, Chandrakant ji , Sayak who is going to take care of the upcoming meeting, they are responsible for making meetup huge success  and to document whatever happens  we have Ankit, Kailas, Harsha and the we have to do facilitation during meetup and bring amazing contents for that we have very huge team of 5 members Mayur, Anup, Priyanka, Meghraj, Diva, and there is an amazing team who is going to find the shape of taskforce team and form structure of Mozilla India  Deb, Vnisha, Prathamesh, Vineel, George +2 people (from the broader Mozilla India community who show great interest and meet).

Then we were discussing how the contributors should be in general, we had some of the amazing selection criteria shared to Mozilla participation team. It was very interesting to sit and discuss with Deb, Sayak , Anivar and Diva regarding this and share our thoughts.

Some of the learning from this meetup is we should have Clear point and should know well to express them, it comes by experience. And a good community members loves to hear form other and then gives positive suggestions. There are contributors who are very committed to the mission and what they contribute, it is purely not committed in terms of hours but it is whole hearted.

I had chance to interact with Chandrakanth ji, he is one of amazing person, helped me whenever i got lost in Pune. I used to talk with him in telegram, finally got chance to meet him.  He was interested to mentor amazing contributors who are ready to learn new things and contribute to community. Hope I can find contributors here, so we can learn from him.

I should say thanks for Sayak who was there with me till  my flight.

There are many contributors around India who are committed, have lots of energy to contribute and share their knowledge and motivated to take amazing initiatives. It may look like India has lot of sub-communities but we are always standing together to contribute and share our knowledge to others. The upcoming meetup will be bringing lot of new contributors who were learning and talking in online to meet offline, it will be amazing days to choose what we will be driving in our contribution areas. The new journey is about to begin soon with amazing Goal settings and learning.

Mozilla Location Services Contest Meetup Tamilnadu

Mozilla Location Services  is one of the most interesting contribution done by many Mozillians all over the world. In my previous post I have also mentioned how easy it is to start contributing to MLS services.

So in Tamilnadu we had a small pilot project where we are inviting new contributors either they are FSA, or experience professional to know about various contribution areas of Mozilla and its service. We called it as Weeks of Contribution, I have also shared about it previously and the impact that is going to be created due to this project as post.

In our First week on June 5th 2015 we had a introduction session about this project and what we are going to do and how we are going to create the impact. Then we have declared two main event one of the major event was Mozilla  Location services – Tamilnadu Stumbling in a Box.

Our main aim was to capture new places around Tamilnadu. This region is not so active in MLS, so would like to start it. On this first session around 10 community members have joined

  1. Karthic Keyan ( @hellokarthic )
  2. Dinesh Mv
  3. Vigneshwer @dvigneshwer
  4. Mohammed Adam @mohammed_adam24
  5. Viswaprasath KS (@iamVP7) – Host
  6. Bharath vijay @bharathvijay38Bala
  7. Techone @balatechone
  8. Vignesh Thivagaran
  9. Venkatesh S @venkatselva8
  10. paarttipaabhalaji@paarilovely

We have created etherpad to show our agenda and the whole event is captured in Google+ hangouts on air, so at any time any can watch. The notes about the whole session is also available in etherpad

Below is the one of the happy moment shared by one contributor.

To make the contributors active we have also created a local leaderboard. The main moto is to bring the first time Contributors to start contribution for the MLS project.  We hope we will bring some more people into this.

My March Contributions to Mozilla Community

This March month is very exciting month for me in terms of contributing to Mozilla Community. I should thank all my friends and other Mozillians who helped and invited me to many events. Right from First day of this month I have been engaged in Community activities very actively.

March 1st 2015

On this day we (Mozilla Chennai Community members) went to interesting Carte Blanche event where there will be full knowledge sharing between open source communities and college students.  We (myself, Naresh Kumar and Sachin) had opportunity to share about Firefox OS, Firefox Accounts and Firefox Add-ons.

I personally handled Firefox OS session. I introduced some of the API’s.

Some of the interesting facts of the event

  • around 250 New Firefox Accounts have been created.
  • Around 350 got introduced about Firefox OS and Firefox Addons
  • Around 200 Students shown Interest to become Firefox Student Ambassador

March 5th – March 7th

During this three days two days are fully dedicated for Firefox OS learning and hackathon and third day is all about general session. It was really one of the great event and full of dedicated Tech enthu. Anokha is biggest annual Tech fest conducted at Amirta University. For this event around 120 students came for hackathon.

Mozillians participated

  • Jai
  • Achyuth
  • Gauthamraj
  • Abhiram
  • Kumar Rishavb
  • Ashyuthosh

First day is full of teaching about Firefox OS. The students were mostly from 1st year and 2nd year of UG. So they had only little knowledge about coding. To tackle this I have created a small template which students can edit and create small Firefox OS apps. Create a template My city which is based on Firefox App of the Month contest.

With the help of this template around 30 apps have been created by 60 students in total on that particular event. Thanks to Nino who is another App reviewer like me helped in reviewing this apps.

March 8th

This day we had simple hackathon at MIT chennai again after 1 week. On this day around 20 developers came and developed apps. Around 12 apps completed on that day.

On the parallel day Khaleel had a event on Localization, I got to learn from him about it to translating Firefox OS apps in Transifex

On 21st and 22nd

We planned to have a booth at VIT chennai on Android Amaze. Our main aim was to introduce students about Mozilla Stumbler, Firefox OS and Firefox Students Ambassador program. We also displayed Firefox OS devices (Flame, Intex Cloud Fx). One of the awesome interaction we had was during introduction of Mozilla Stumbler to a student.

Open Source Air Quality Monitor

There are many system which monitor the heat level of a certain area or tell us the direction of a destination. But with air pollution reaching a   whole new level it demands actions to be taken. We have come up with a   pollution detector which will give pollution level similar to heat maps of earth in real time. Our project is open source has a compact and is cost efficient.
We are looking for  cloud based services ,to connect the user to the device 24*7.With Mozilla we are giving the independence to user to monitor his house air quality from anywhere be it office or another country. We can setup devices in buses ,trains  and other public and  private transports to get the data from a city, state, country and finally across the Globe.
From this data any tourists can get the tips of what type of
remedy is required to counter the pollution in different counties. We can create awareness about how  our daily activities contribute to  pollution and thus take one more step in a cleaner technology and greener future.
We have our prototype ready with all the specification .We are looking forward to work with Mozilla and contribute
to the society.

We had around 600 Students visiting our booth.

Blogpost

I used to test Firefox OS with nightly version, and write blogpost about interesting features it has. In this month I wrote about Find My Device option which is available in Firefox 2.0+
Finding Firefox device from browser
Enabling Find My Firefox Device
On 28th and 29th

I was having a small idea about bring new contributors to Firefox OS apps Localization. So I tried to contact other regional Localization experts for help with this event. Since many language people are getting involved we decided to make it online, so we can easily teach other in IRC. In India Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Kanadam and Telugu contributors participated. For other languages it was bit difficult to find in short time. So we (Rigin oommen, Ayan choudhury, Biraj, Khaleel jageer, Raj suthar,Veera Manikanta, Sukanta Pal) talked in Facebook and decided to mentor new upcoming contributors.

Around 9 apps have been translated by Malayalam, Bengali and Tamil Community members.

Localization Contributions By me.

I have Translated around 3 apps in this month

Firefox OS Marketplace Appreviewer

This is my main Area of contribution, this month I was busy with lot of other contributions due to which I was not able to contribute much. Around 167 apps has been reviewed till today.

It was really a wonderful month of contribution, I was able to contribute to Firefox OS app, Firefox OS knowledge sharing, Firefox OS Localisation, Firefox OS devices Writing in MDN and also to Firefox OS Marketplace as App-reviewer.

FSA Bootcamp India

It sounds Interesting right, ya it is the first event conducted only for Firefox Student Ambassadors. On Feb 14, yes on Valentine’s  day FSA task force of India invited around 50 Firefox Student Ambassadors to Mozilla Space at Bangalore. These 50 students has been invited after selection based on their Previous contributions to Mozilla projects.

Firefox Student Ambassadors is one of the biggest and active ambassador programs in India. As I write, we have 28790 registered students globally with 16700 students from India.

The event started around 10.00 AM on Saturday. First we had introduction about Firefox HelloArcadio Lainez, Product Marketing Manager gave us a live demo of Firefox Hello explaining in brief all the features and future plans for Hello. It is one of the awesome feature introduced in Firefox 35.0, it is used for Real time Video conversation with our friends. Interesting video about Firefox hello is available in Youtube.

Then we had video chat with TJ, Community Manager for FSA. She was giving more insights about Firefox Program and what are the upcoming interesting things. Being FSA is not only Marketing products, it is about learning more about Open source Contribution.

There were lot of things to discuss in this meetup, and some of FSA are not aware of others. So after a small break FSA have been divided into 4 groups, and in each group 1 Mozilla Rep or 1 FSA E-board members were there. We were discussing how everyone started contributing and we introduced about us also.

Galaxy gave a brief introduction about the program and various way to get involved. Then Biraj was explaining a lot about new recognition  system and various badges that are being introduced very shortly. Then We had awesome session given by Gauthamraj like how he started to contribute to Mozilla as a student, what was his mission and so on.

Without our RAL’s help the event might have not finished well. They are awesome people (Santosh Viswanatham, Bala Subramaniyan). And we had our Vineel Reddy who helped us to learn more about Mozilla.

Santosh helped FSA’s to know more about Firefox OS app development. It was very interesting. I was helping him during demo session, and told taught how Marketplace team will review each and every app, and guidelines for submitting a good app. Another app reviewer Trishul goel who is responsible for taking care of Tarako apps queue joined us.

Mozilla Community India Meetup 2014

FSA team - Mozilla India

FSA team – Mozilla India

This is one of the biggest meet up by the Mozilla India. Contributors from different parts of the India came and participated in the event. Really most excited to attend this event. But due to exams missed some parts of the events on 6th evening and 4th.

I reached Park hyderabad on 5th morning around 9.30 AM. It was a long  journey and one of the excited journey to meet Mozillians all over the India.  Then got ready somewhat faster and started to attend event around 10 AM.  The event started with the updates of the year 2013 by different task force team.

After that everyone started to join respective task force and started to share the ideas which they had in their mind. First day I joined with Technical team and shared my Ideas about how to improve the leader board which is available. I had a suggestion to add Firefox OS apps developer under Developers sections. Many had ideas to add contributors from SUMO team, Localisation team and so on. It was really a health discussion.

Then I had to joined with Firefox Students Ambassador task force team for the next whole day. I interacted with students to know what are all the difficulties they faced and how to improve App of the month contest so that they can develop lot of applications.  Then came to know that less awareness about Mozilla Appmaker and Tutorials.  To help them I updated the wiki page with tools and tutorials. Click here

Then the next day joined with Webmaker team and learned more about it. It was very interesting to discuss about the Webmaker.

I had interested to contribute to Mozilla developer Network which I feel is the biggest resource to learn about web technologies. The first thing which I did after Meet up was tweeting for SUMO.

I am excited now. Would like to contribute more and in different ways.
